Please read about the ferrets that have battled against the odds to be with us today. And only with your kind donations, and alot of sleepless nights and hard work by friends also.
Thank you all for your help.
Stan was found by a dog in a tote bag on a rubbish tip with his brother & sister she was already dead. They had been starved and were in a very bad way. Stan and Merlin were brought to Harrietsham Ferret Rescue and with lots of food, drink, love and attention they pulled through. Stan and Merlin stayed with us after they recoverd as we could not let them go after all we had gone through .
This is stan 3months later
As you can see, I love my drinks.......who forgot the sugar!!!!!!!!!!
Stan 2months later, see what love and care can do.
Hi. My name is Merlin and like Stan I was brought into Harrietsham Ferret Rescue in a sorry state. My previous owners tried to make me a vegetarian, but guess what? Ferrets are meat eaters. It took them until I had got to this state before they took me to my new home. With a lot of proper food and lots of love I am happy, with my new owner Chris Wilson.
Sadly we lost Stan and Merlin early in the year. They had a good 6 years or so with us and enjoyed the last years of their lives. They will be missed.
My mum keeps
feeding me lots of meat.
Merlin 3 months after he came to us.
We returned home from an evening out, to find someone had left some hutches outside our gate.
We thought how handy? we thought we will move them in the morning as it was a bit too dark to do it then, and there. Imagine our shock when we saw something moving in one of the cages. When we took a closer look we found that there was ferrets in them. Needless to say we had to move them then, and there. Pitch black, and tired we managed to move them up to where all the ferrets are kept. On closer inspection, we found that there was 8 jills and 7 hobs, all mixed together in the cages.
Guess what? The jills were in season. This meant that we had lots of kits that year that were very unexpected.
We rehomed most of these ferrets.
We were asked to pick up 3 ferrets from a lady who had split from her partner. The ferrets were his and she didn't like the furry things too much as she was scared of them. All she would do is throw the food into the cage for them.
While we were there, we saw a young pup in the garden in the rain. She was getting rid of him as well. Needless to say we are both soft when it comes to animals and said we would take him as well.
What were we going to do, we had 7 dogs at home already, along with the 100 odd ferrets, but what could we do but take him. So we loaded the ferrets and the dog, that we named Sid, into the car and went home. Sid was sick 4 times on that journey.
We were a bit worried how the others would take to him, but we needn't have worried, he took them all on even though he was still small. Sid is still with us and still the boss and being sick in the car. One time Chris decided to hold his head out the window to be sick and it blew right back into her face. Yuk, I didn't kiss her for a while.
Sids a Cutie really - hehe!! He is staying with us.
Spike was born a healthy polecat ferret. He was always into mischief and first in the food bowl at 5 weeks old. He was eating rabbit and chicks before all the rest. He was at the door of his hutch or if he was in the court, he was first up the door waiting to be greeted. He was a very lively fellow and loved to play with you and give you a friendly nip. He loved chasing his brothers and sister.
One day, sometime in March, he was not the first at the door, we called and looked around for him. We found him in the bed compartment and there he was. He just looked up at us, there was something wrong. We moved him to a hutch on his own to keep an eye on him. By the following morning he was not looking too well at all he seemed to have lost nearly all his body weight over night. We took him up to the vets and he was put on a drip and had blood tests.
The vet said he was a very sick fellow. But the blood test came back clear and no one seems to know what is wrong with him. He could not eat his food properly, as he could not open his mouth even though we had looked in there, there was nothing to stop him opening his mouth.
I had never seen anything like this in all the years I have been around ferrets. With a lot of love and liquidised food Spike was getting fitter. He was putting on weight, getting stonger and had even started to eat whole chicks.
But sadly Spike lost his battle with life yesterday 22nd May 2007. He will be greatly missed by everyone, even though he was sick he was still a very loveable ferret.
This is Angel who Steve Moss, our vet, did his best to save her life after she had been attaked by a fox and we rescued her. We brought her home and nursed her back to health. She was a lovely jill who played for hours and was a joy to own. It seemed she knew what had been done to make her well again. So I would like to thank all of you who came to the ferret racing at the shows we attend and for your donations as this helps us to care for these ferrets the way we do.
Roy & Chris
This is Rosie. When she lost her friend Poppy she found a new friend in Sugar, the cat.
One day we received a phone call from someone who was looking after someone else's ferrets. We were told there was approximately 10. We went to see them and found that there was 16 and they were not in a very pretty state.
There was a jill in a small cat carrier and she had been placed in there 2 years previously because she had had a fight. She was very nervous.
We took the 16 ferrets home, we cared for them, but 4 died within a week. The rest were up and down to the vets for different things that were wrong with them. Out of the 16 ferrets, 12 survived and were rehomed.
Kim & Danny our friends took 2 and they were their first ferrets which they loved dearly, until they died about 18 months later. They were called Rosie and Poppy and had a good life with them, and it was great to see them playing and happy in the last months of their lives.
It will soon be the busy season again here at the rescue. New ferrets are coming in all the time. Some old, some unwanted, lost or hurt. Your support is most welcome either by rehoming a ferret or just ringing to see how they are getting on.
If you are interested or have any questions then please ring us and we will be happy to advise you.
